Thesis Comparison of selected Czech translations of Cervantes's Don Quixote Vojtěch Kolomý Abstract The aim of this thesis is to compare the last two translations of Cervantes's Don Quixote: the translation realised by Václav Černý in 1931 and the translation of Zdeněk Šmíd from 1952. Although the thesis focuses on the original versions of both translations, the later changed editions are taken into account too. The structure of the thesis is as follows: First, the thesis analyses Cervantes's original text with respect to the translation and after a short chapter about the first Czech translators of Don Quixote and their translations, it describes the translations of Černý and Šmíd and the circumstances of the genesis of both translations. Then, the core of this thesis is a detailed parallel comparison of certain passages from Don Quixote. In the final chapter, the findings are applied. Czech Prosaic Works in the Period of 1945-1948

The thesis focuses on the reception of existentialism in the Czech entourage in 1945-1948. The theoretical part of the chapter is dedicated to Václav Černý and his understanding of existensialism. We are going to be focusing on the professional and theoretical texts from Jaroslav Červinka, Jindřich Chalupecký, Václav Navrátil, Jan Patočka and Ladislav Rieger, which are processing the theme. In the practical part we are going to analyze the pieces from Dušan Pala, Miroslav Hanuš and Egon Hostovský, we are going to concentrate on whether the principles of existential imagination are reflected and which way were these imaginations expressed.

In the Middle of the Night. Kamil Bednář and His Literary Circle in the 2nd Half of the 1930s and Early 1940s

The following Ph.D. thesis focuses on the poet Kamil Bednář and a group of young writers around him between 1936 and 1941. The author pays attention to Bednář´s poetry as well as to his activities leading to the constitution of a new literary generation at the turn of 1930s and 1940s. Using the rhetoric analysis and interpretation of Bednář´s poetic language, its transformations, dominant figures and textual strategies are identified; special emphasis is put on the comparison of poetic discourses of Bednář and those of his colleague Jiří Orten. The author also examines articles in the period press and other relevant materials for the purpose of reconstruction of the group´s thinking orientation and its relation to contemporary discoursive formations. Besides the activities of Bednář´s group, other factors that contributed to the creation of new literary generation are also explored, above all the ideas and activities of the prominent critic Václav Černý.
